at the New Mexico Tamal Fiesta Y Más

Yes! Tamales are the heart our annual Fiesta! But wait! In this year's Fiesta is an added feature, a Disco Cooking Contest, a partnership between the Fiesta committee and Town Councilor José Ray Jr.

A disco is a disk that is similar to a wok and is used over a propane gas flame.

  • Ten contestants will begin cooking their disco specialties in the morning.
  • For $10.00 a ticket, Fiesta attendees may taste 10 different tacos and vote for the one they think is the BEST!

Fifty tickets will be sold and the proceeds from the ticket sales will be used to award cash prizes to the top three contest winners.  The contest is open to everyone; however it is hoped that Grant County families will want to enter and provide a taste of their family recipes.

The Winners

Contest winners announced at the end of the Fiesta and the cash prizes awarded.

Local Sponsor of the New Mexico Tamal Fiesta Y Mas and the Disco Cooking Contest, Griffin's Propane, sells propane discos. "Discos" are cooking discs used mainly in the southwestern U.S. and in Mexico.

Traditionally, they are made from re-purposed metal plow discs, and are sometimes handed down in families through generations
